On Friday and Saturday, EMS international’s Dr. Kerry Simpson and Matthew Rolph visited Sairee Cottage Dive Centre on Koh Tao to assist PADI Course Director Marcel Van den Berg, in teaching this month’s PADI IDC candidates to become proficient Emergency First Response PADI EFR Instructors and Oxygen Providers.

Having Kerry and Matt visit allowed us to expand the candidate’s knowledge well beyond the requirements of the course!

Our PADI EFR Instructor candidates then got to demonstrate some new and alternative techniques and can enhance their skill-set. Providing this extra knowledge helps our PADI Dive Instructors to answer more in-depth questions and provide excellent support to their future students.

PADI EFR Instructor Sairee Cottage Diving Koh TaoFriday afternoon started with knowledge reviews and discussion of some of the more complex questions, especially highlighting how this knowledge applies to the dive industry.

Saturday morning started with the oxygen provider course, running through when oxygen should be administered and demonstrating the use of the “pin-index” oxygen cylinder. This was followed by explaining which different masks can be used under what circumstances and a discussion on the percentage of O2 to delivered to the patient with these different methods.

Emergency First Response Instructor Koh TaoSaturday afternoon allowed the candidates to perfect their EFR practical skills; applying barriers, dressing wounds, applying splints, providing CPR and using a defibrillator.  After this we allowed the candidates to divide into groups and make up their own trauma scenarios for their colleagues to treat.  This resulted in a crowd of bystanders watching as a plastic baby was delivered in the bar at Sairee Cottage Diving. The ‘baby’ was choking but treated successfully and the happy ‘mother’ named her baby “Shannon” after the heroic rescuer.  A few minutes later, this favor was returned when there was a fake near-fatal motorbike crash in which a hysterical Charlotte watched as Shannon was resuscitated, defibrillated and his tomato ketchup head wound treated, just before the ants started biting!

Congratulations to everyone for passing their PADI EFR Instructor Course on Koh Tao!
